"Night Falls on the Lagoon"

Photographer  ‑  Frank Carroll
A sleek and dark beast, with a huge serpent's body and the head of a horse might appear to anyone looking across towards Punta de la Dogana from St. Mark's square. There is a legend that this terrible creature lives in a deep hollow far below. It appears only rarely, late on moonless nights when the waves are lapping gently on the moored gondolas. As it passes deep below, the gondolas unexpectedly and mysteriously rock from side to side.

Photographers remark: This sort of thing can often be a more difficult shot. Low light can require either a higher ISO or a slower shutter speed, and usually both as was the case here. The gondolas can be blurred due to movement of the water, but there was no sea monster this night so the water was fairly calm. .
